The long way home

Five drivers on the empty hours between midnight and dawn, and why the road looks different when nobody is watching.

01

Lamplight

A field guide to the last street lamp before the motorway.

02

Static

Late radio, and the voices that keep long-haul drivers awake.

03

Moonroof

What you see when you finally look up at a red light.

There is a lamp at the edge of town that nobody remembers putting up. It stands in a field, wired to nothing anyone can find, and every night at a quarter past eleven it comes on.

The drivers who pass it say the sky bends round it. They say it the way you say something you know sounds silly, and then they say it again.

We went to look. We stood in the field until the light came on, and then we stopped talking for a while.
